Rochester, N.Y. — A groundbreaking study happening in Rochester is revealing a link between air pollution and Parkinson's disease.

Researchers say Rochester is a hot spot — one of the regions with median levels of pollution. That means people in Rochester have a 56 percent greater risk of developing the disease, which is a brain disorder that causes uncontrollable movements, such as shaking and tremors.

"Vulnerable communities, they can use this information to mitigate their own exposure by being vigilant on air quality alert days, and limiting their time outdoors when advised," said Dr. Brittany Krzyzanowski, a researcher for the Barrow Neurological Institute
